Hormone Balance Supplements for Women: What the Evidence Says
By Functnl Team · Last updated 8 October 2026
Hormone balance supplements for women are not a substitute for medical care, but some ingredients have research behind them. One 2-capsule serving of FUNCTNL Female Balance & Performance gives you 250 mg of shatavari and fenugreek, 250 mg of myo-inositol and 150 µg of iodine. See your GP about irregular periods.
Key Takeaways
- One 2-capsule serving of FUNCTNL Female Balance & Performance provides 250 mg of Fetaari® (shatavari and fenugreek), 250 mg of myo-inositol, 150 µg of iodine and 2.8 mg of vitamin B6.
- Vitamin B6 contributes to the regulation of hormonal activity, and iodine contributes to the normal production of thyroid hormones.
- Myo-inositol trials in PCOS commonly use 4 g a day, about 16 times the 250 mg in one serving, and a 2024 review called the evidence limited and inconclusive.
- A shatavari trial used 300 mg of a standardised extract alone for 8 weeks, and the evidence is still early.
- Take 2 capsules a day with breakfast, and see your GP for irregular periods or symptoms that disrupt your life.
Some weeks you train well and sleep well. Other weeks you feel flat, your cycle changes and nothing seems to add up. Many women in that position search for hormone balance supplements.
Hormones are controlled by your brain, ovaries and thyroid, so no capsule can simply balance them. Some nutrients do support normal hormonal activity, though, and a few plant extracts have early research.
This guide covers what the evidence says, how much to take, who should avoid it and when to see your GP.
What Are Hormone Balance Supplements for Women?
Hormone balance supplements for women are food supplements that provide nutrients and plant extracts to support normal hormonal activity, not to diagnose or treat a condition.
Hormones are chemical messengers made by your ovaries, thyroid and adrenal glands. Their levels shift across the menstrual cycle and with stress, sleep, training and life stage. A supplement can supply nutrients your body uses. It cannot tell you why your cycle has changed. If you suspect a condition such as PCOS, talk to your GP (NHS).
Myo-inositol is a sugar-like compound found naturally in the body. Shatavari is the root of Asparagus racemosus, used in Ayurveda for centuries. Fenugreek is a seed used in cooking and traditional herbal medicine.
What Is in One Serving of Female Balance & Performance?
One serving is 2 capsules. Here is what it provides:
| Nutrient | Per 2 capsules |
|---|---|
| Fetaari® botanical complex (shatavari and fenugreek) | 250 mg |
| Myo-inositol | 250 mg |
| Magnesium (bisglycinate) | 40 mg (11% NRV) |
| Vitamin C | 80 mg (100% NRV) |
| Vitamin D3 | 500 IU (250% NRV) |
| Vitamin B6 | 2.8 mg (200% NRV) |
| Iodine | 150 µg (100% NRV) |
| Sugar | 0 g |
Fetaari® is a branded complex of shatavari and fenugreek, so the shatavari in a serving is less than 250 mg. Keep that in mind, because the research below uses different amounts.
What Are the Benefits of Hormone Balance Supplements for Women?
Can Supplements Help With Hormonal Imbalance?
No supplement can diagnose or correct a hormonal imbalance, so see your GP first if you have irregular or absent periods, excess hair growth or unexplained fatigue. A GP can arrange hormone tests to check for conditions such as PCOS (NHS). Supplements can sit alongside medical advice, not replace it.
Do Vitamin B6 and Iodine Support Normal Hormone Function?
Vitamin B6 contributes to the regulation of hormonal activity. Iodine contributes to normal thyroid function and the normal production of thyroid hormones. These are authorised health claims in Great Britain (GB NHC register). One serving provides 2.8 mg of vitamin B6 (200% NRV) and 150 µg of iodine (100% NRV).
Does Myo-Inositol Help?
Myo-inositol research is mostly in women with PCOS, and the evidence is limited. A 2024 review of 30 trials with 2,230 women found benefits for some metabolic measures, but called the overall evidence limited and inconclusive (Fitz et al., 2024).
Trials commonly use 2 g of myo-inositol twice a day (Orrù et al., 2017). That is 4 g, about 16 times the 250 mg in one serving, so our dose cannot be compared with those trials. There is no authorised UK health claim for myo-inositol, so we describe this as research, not as an effect of our product.
Does Shatavari Help?
Shatavari has a long traditional use, but human evidence is early. An 8-week trial of 80 women aged 40 to 55 with perimenopausal symptoms found that 300 mg a day of a standardised root extract improved scores on a menopause symptom scale more than placebo (Mahajan et al., 2025). It was a single-site trial in India, and the authors called for longer, larger studies.
The shatavari in our serving is part of a 250 mg blend with fenugreek, below the dose in that trial. There is no authorised UK health claim for shatavari or fenugreek.
Does Your Menstrual Cycle Affect Training?
Exercise performance might be trivially reduced in the early follicular phase, the days around your period, compared with other phases. That is the finding of a meta-analysis of 73 studies, and its authors called for better-quality research (McNulty et al., 2020). The effect is small, so track your own sessions and symptoms before changing your training.
How Should You Take Female Balance & Performance, and When?
Take 2 capsules (1 serving) a day with water, ideally in the morning with breakfast. Choose one row below, because the daily amount is 2 capsules, not 2 per row.
| Use | Amount | Liquid | Best time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Daily routine | 2 capsules | Water, with breakfast | Morning |
| Training days | 2 capsules | Water, with food | Morning, or around training |
| Rest days | 2 capsules | Water, with breakfast | Same time as training days |
When Is the Best Time to Take It?
The best time to take Female Balance & Performance is whenever you will take it every day. The label recommends breakfast. The shatavari trial above ran for 8 weeks, so give any change time before you judge it.
How Do You Take It?
- Take 2 capsules from the pack.
- Swallow them with water at breakfast.
- Repeat at the same time every day, including rest days.
- Note your sleep, training and cycle in a simple diary for 8 weeks.
- Speak to your GP if symptoms worsen or do not settle.
Female Balance & Performance vs a Multivitamin: Which Should You Choose?
Choose a multivitamin if you want broad everyday nutrient cover. Choose Female Balance & Performance if you want a short formula with myo-inositol and shatavari and fenugreek alongside vitamin B6 and iodine. Neither replaces a varied diet or medical advice.
| Feature | Female Balance & Performance | Typical multivitamin |
|---|---|---|
| Ingredients | 8 targeted ingredients | Often 15 or more nutrients |
| Myo-inositol | 250 mg | Rarely included |
| Shatavari and fenugreek | 250 mg Fetaari® blend | Rarely included |
| Vitamin B6 | 2.8 mg (200% NRV) | Varies by product |
| Iodine | 150 µg (100% NRV) | Varies by product |
| Vitamin D3 | 500 IU (250% NRV) | Varies by product |
Is Female Balance & Performance Safe?
Female Balance & Performance is a food supplement, and it is not suitable for everyone. Do not exceed the recommended daily intake, and keep it out of reach of children.
Who Should Avoid It?
- Anyone pregnant or breastfeeding, unless a healthcare professional advises it.
- Anyone with a thyroid condition, because one serving contains 150 µg of iodine.
- Anyone with diabetes or a medical condition, because myo-inositol has been studied for its effect on insulin sensitivity.
- Anyone on hormonal medication, including the contraceptive pill or HRT, because shatavari and fenugreek contain plant compounds with oestrogen-like activity.
Food supplements should not replace a varied, balanced diet. Speak to your GP before use if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, taking medication or have a medical condition.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do Hormone Balance Supplements Work?
Some nutrients support normal hormonal activity, such as vitamin B6, but supplements cannot diagnose or replace care for a hormone condition. Plant extracts such as shatavari have early research only. See your GP if symptoms are persistent, and think of any supplement as an addition to diet, sleep and training.
How Long Does Female Balance & Performance Take to Work?
There is no set time. The shatavari trial above ran for 8 weeks, and supplements are not instant. Take 2 capsules daily with breakfast, keep a simple diary of sleep, training and cycle, and review it after 8 to 12 weeks. See your GP sooner if symptoms worsen.
Can You Take Female Balance & Performance Every Day?
Yes, the serving we recommend is 2 capsules a day, and the label says it suits daily use as part of a balanced diet. Do not exceed the recommended daily intake. Speak to your GP first if you have a medical condition, take medication, or are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Can You Take It With the Contraceptive Pill or HRT?
Speak to your GP or pharmacist first. Shatavari and fenugreek contain plant compounds with oestrogen-like activity, and we know of no studies of this product alongside hormonal medication. Do not stop or change any prescribed treatment because of a supplement.
Is Female Balance & Performance Suitable for PCOS?
PCOS is a medical condition, so speak to your GP before using any supplement. Myo-inositol has been studied in PCOS at about 4 g a day, far above the 250 mg in a serving, and the 2024 review found the evidence limited. This product is not a medical treatment for PCOS.
Can You Take It With Other Supplements?
Check your totals first. One serving has 500 IU of vitamin D3 (250% NRV) and 150 µg of iodine (100% NRV), so read the labels of any other supplements to avoid doubling up. Speak to your GP or pharmacist if you are unsure.
Is Female Balance & Performance Vegetarian and Free From Common Allergens?
Yes, it is suitable for vegetarians and is gluten-free, dairy-free, soy-free and sugar-free, with no artificial colouring. The label lists no known allergens. Check the full ingredients on the pack if you have an allergy or follow a specific diet.
